Balayage or Foils?
Which highlights fit your hair
Balayage is painted on by hand, so the color melts into your natural shade and grows out softly. It suits guests who want brightness without a hard line at the root and fewer visits. Foil highlights lift more evenly from the root and give a brighter, more uniform result, which is often the better call for a dramatic change or for blending gray.
We walk through the difference in detail in balayage vs. traditional highlights.
Keep It Fresh
Making salon color last
Hot water, sun and daily heat styling are what fade color between visits, and a toner appointment is the quickest way to bring highlights back to the shade you left with. Our stylists explain the full routine in why hair color fades so fast. Smoothing on top of color? Our keratin aftercare guide covers how to keep both looking fresh.
Highlights & Lowlights
Full highlights, partial highlights and lowlights
They sound alike, but they do different jobs. Here is who each one suits.
Full foil highlights
Lightened pieces placed through the whole head, from the part down to the nape. A good fit if you want an all over brighter look, a bigger change, or an even blend through hair with some gray in it.
Partial foil highlights
Brightness where people notice it most: around your face, along your part and through the top. A good fit if you want a lift without lightening every strand, or if you have never had highlights and want an easy first step.
Lowlights
The opposite of a highlight: pieces a little deeper than your base color, woven in for depth. They bring back dimension to hair that has gone too light or flat, and they help gray blend in. Lowlights are not a separate line on our menu, so mention them when you book and your colorist will build them into your color plan.
How often you come back depends on the technique. Foil highlights usually need a refresh every 6 to 8 weeks, while balayage often stretches to 3 or 4 months. For lowlights or a mix of techniques, your colorist will suggest a schedule that fits your hair and your calendar.
Gray Hair
Covering or blending gray
Full coverage uses permanent color to hide gray completely and give you one even shade from root to end. It is usually the better choice if you are more than about half gray, or if you simply want nothing gray showing. Because the root line shows as your hair grows, plan on a color retouch every 4 to 6 weeks.
Blending softens gray instead of hiding it. A demi permanent color, or highlights and lowlights, turns the gray into dimension, so the grow out is gentle and most guests come back every 8 to 12 weeks. Your colorist will look at how much gray you have and where it sits before recommending either one.

Fixing Past Color
Corrective color
Banding, box dye buildup, brassy tones, patchy lightening or a shade you never asked for: corrective color is how we fix a past result. It is booked by consultation only. A colorist needs to see your hair, hear its color history and sometimes take a small strand test before anyone can say what is realistic, how many visits it may take or what it will cost. We do not quote or promise results on hair we have not seen.
Here is what happens inside a corrective color consultation. When you are ready, request a consultation or call (513) 791-0600.

Questions
Hair color FAQ
How much does balayage cost at Salon Bastille?
Balayage starts at $150, full foil highlights at $125 and partial foil highlights at $95. Prices are a starting point and vary with hair length, the time your service needs and stylist level. Our pricing page lists every current starting price.
Should I get balayage or foil highlights?
Balayage is painted by hand for a soft, blended grow out that needs fewer touch ups. Foils give more even, brighter lift from the root. Your colorist will look at your hair, your current color and how often you want to come in before recommending one.
Do you do corrective color?
Yes, by consultation only. Correcting box dye, banding or a color that went wrong takes planning, and sometimes more than one visit, so we see your hair first and build the plan with you before any color is mixed.
What is the difference between highlights and lowlights?
Highlights lighten pieces of your hair for brightness. Lowlights do the opposite and add pieces a little deeper than your base color for depth. Many guests get both, because lowlights keep highlighted hair from looking flat and help gray blend in. Your colorist will suggest the mix that suits your hair.
Should I get full or partial highlights?
Full foil highlights brighten the whole head and suit a bigger change. Partial foil highlights brighten around your face, along your part and through the top, which is where most people notice color, and they are a good first step if you have never had highlights. Foil highlights usually need a refresh every 6 to 8 weeks.
Can you blend my gray instead of covering it?
Yes. Blending uses a demi permanent color or highlights and lowlights to soften gray so it reads as dimension, and the grow out is softer, so most guests come back every 8 to 12 weeks. Full coverage hides gray completely and usually needs a root retouch every 4 to 6 weeks. Your colorist will look at how much gray you have before recommending one.
